Garvagh's annual SPARK Programme made front page news for all the right reasons in this week's edition of the Church of Ireland Gazette.
The paper's editor, Earl Storey, chose it as his 'lead' item because, he said, it was "a good news story" that illustrated much of the great work being done at youth level in parishes right across the Church of Ireland.
SPARK (Servants Pursuing a Radical Kingdom) is now in its fifth year. It is based at St Paul’s Church of Ireland and brings young people from across the community together to build new friendships and help communities in Garvagh and nearby Glenullin. This year more than 40 young people took part.
The Rector of Errigal and Desertoghill, Canon Paul Whittaker, says youth participation has trebled since SPARK was first launched in 2013: “We began with 14 young people, aged between 12 and 16. This is our way of sharing in Derry and Raphoe’s mission, ‘Transforming Community - Radiating Christ’.”
